Reports to: Director of Communications and Operations/Albany High School Principal

Primary Duties

PUBLIC RELATIONS

  • As a member of our Communications Department team, develops content for print and digital communications, with a primary goal of increasing student and family engagement. Platforms and materials include but are not limited to social media, website, newsletters, calendars, announcements, brochures and postcards.
  • Photography and short-form videography.
  • Assists with updating and maintaining website content.
  •  Works directly with principals and designated faculty and staff at assigned schools to produce weekly updates for the entire school community distributed through digital platforms.
  •  Assists principals and designated faculty and staff at assigned schools and departments with the implementation and enhancement of social media tools, with a particular focus on short-form video, photography and other visual content designed to increase engagement among parents and guardians, and community members.

MEDIA RELATIONS

  • Assists with writing and editing news releases, media advisories and other media-related materials as needed 
  • Assists with researching questions and obtaining information from appropriate district and school personnel in response to media inquiries.
  • Assists the Communications team with maintaining media contact contacts.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

  • Assists with the development of materials and digital survey tools and other materials for public meetings and events;  provides related follow-up communication through a variety of platforms when appropriate.
  • Attends Board of Education and community meetings as necessary and seeks opportunities to further relationships with parents and guardians, community groups, businesses, educational institutions, etc.

OTHER

  • Assists with the development and execution of new and innovative communications and community relations tactics in line with the district’s strategic plan, with a particular focus on messaging and content to engage and empower students as well as parents and guardians, and community members.
  • Performs general administrative duties such as typing, filing, answering telephone calls, photocopying, etc.
  • Participates in relevant meetings with district, school and communications with staff

 

 

Job Qualifications

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university or one accredited by the NYS Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Journalism, English or related field and five (5) years fulltime paid experience in communications, media, public relations, marketing, or a closely related field; OR
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s Degree in Journalism, English or related field and seven (7) years fulltime paid experience as defined by the limits of (A) above; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

 

Preferred:

  •  Demonstrated proficiency with digital communication tools, and writing and editing for print and digital marketing materials (including website and social media content, newsletter articles, brochures, etc.)
  •  Experience with Google Workspace, including Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Meet, etc.
  •  Experience with virtual meeting platforms (Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.) for internal and public meetings.
  •  Knowledge of desktop publishing, layout and graphic design (use of space, fonts, graphics, photos, etc.).
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with digital camera use for both still photography and video content.
  •  Good organizational skills and an eye for detail
  • Excellent customer service skills and an ability to foster relationships with internal and external partners.
  •  A passion for continuous learning and motivation to develop as a school public relations professional.
  •  An interest in and familiarity with issues affecting public education, such as family engagement strategies, learning standards and teaching methods relevant to urban school districts, alternative education, special education, athletics, etc.
