General Statement:                        

The Building Maintenance Worker performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance, care, and modification of school district grounds and landscapes. Experience needed in the operation of electrically-powered and gasoline-powered grounds-keeping equipment, machines, and the use of small hand and power tools. Performs outside grounds maintenance and routine building cleaning tasks in a school district; does related work as required.
 

Responsibilities:                              

  • Mows laws, trims shrubs, rakes leaves and performs a variety of other grounds keeping tasks as assigned.
  • This is manual work calling for the efficient performance of school building cleaning, grounds keeping and snow removal tasks.
  • Clears snow and ice from school sidewalks, doors, entryways and parking lots
  • Maintains the school grounds by picking up trash and debris.
  • This position is distinguished from that of a Cleaner by the heavier nature of the work performed and because of involvement in outside grounds maintenance activities. 
  • Strips and waxes floors and halls using heavy machinery.
  • Operates heavy rug shampoo equipment.
  • Cleaning tasks are performed according to a well-established procedure and involve some heavy work requiring physical strength and ability.
  • The work is performed under supervision of a higher level custodial employee. 
  • Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class.
  • Sweeps and mops floors, stairs and halls including classrooms, cafeterias, gyms, auditoriums and locker rooms.
  • Performs general cleaning of school rooms involving dusting furniture and washing and cleaning walls, blackboards, desks, windows, sinks, showers, toilets and locker rooms.
  • Empties wastepaper baskets and disposes of school rubbish from large barrels into removable truck containers.
  • Arranges chairs, tables and other equipment for special use of school buildings, such as PTA meetings, assemblies, graduation, etc.
  • May unload truck deliveries, stock shelves and perform other heavy lifting and moving tasks
  • May deliver packages and messages.
     

Full Performance, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:                                  

  • Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment and ability to use them economically ad efficiently.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual cleaning, lifting and minor grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Willingness to perform routine cleaning and other manual tasks.
  • Ability to get along with others; physical strength, and good physical condition.

This is routine clerical work of limited complexity and variety, requiring the skilled use of a computer and/or typewriter.  Employees in this class perform duties, the clerical aspects of which are standardized and repetitive, but which require training in keyboarding input. Detailed instructions are given at the beginning of the work and on new assignments, but employees familiar with the operations and procedures may work with some independence and some initiative and judgment is utilized as experience is gained. Employees may make arithmetic or other checks upon the work of other employees for accuracy although direct supervision is not usually exercised. Work is subject to close supervision and is reviewed by a superior upon completion for both content and accuracy.

  • Types articles, forms, vendor’s claims, letters, memoranda, bulletins, reports, tabulations, purchase orders, cards, payrolls, trial calendar requisitions, marriage cards, copies of ordinances and resolutions, birth and death certificates and records, attendance and student records, laboratory reports, case reports, commitment papers
  • and other material from copy, rough draft or dictating machine;
  • Sorts and files correspondence, checks, vouchers, index cards or other materials by numeric, alphabetic or other established classifications;
  • Assists in the maintenance of personnel, payroll, equipment or other records, and in the preparation of reports;
  • Makes simple arithmetic calculations;
  • Computes data from requisitions, statistical reports, time reports or other records;
  • Acts as receptionist;
  • Answers telephone and personal inquiries;
  • Routes visitors and calls;
  • Secures and gives out routine information relating to office operations and activities;
  • Operates the switchboard or other office equipment ;

Monitors lunch periods in school classrooms; does related work as required.

These duties involve responsibility for relieving classroom teachers during lunch periods in schools where there are no cafeterias.  Lunch Aides maintain order and insure that children finish their lunches during the lunch period.  The duties of Lunch Aides differ from those of School Monitors in that Lunch Aides are more limited in the degree of responsibility and types of assignment they are given.  The work is performed under the general supervision of the School Principal.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK: 

  • Relieves teachers by supervising children in the classroom during lunch hour
  • Insures that children eat their lunches and clean up afterwards
  • Maintain order in the classroom
  • Reports accidents and problems arising during lunch periods to the School Principal
  • May prepare simple reports relating to lunch period activities
