This is routine clerical work of limited complexity and variety, requiring the skilled use of a computer and/or typewriter.  Employees in this class perform duties, the clerical aspects of which are standardized and repetitive, but which require training in keyboarding input. Detailed instructions are given at the beginning of the work and on new assignments, but employees familiar with the operations and procedures may work with some independence and some initiative and judgment is utilized as experience is gained. Employees may make arithmetic or other checks upon the work of other employees for accuracy although direct supervision is not usually exercised. Work is subject to close supervision and is reviewed by a superior upon completion for both content and accuracy.

  • and other material from copy, rough draft or dictating machine;
  • Sorts and files correspondence, checks, vouchers, index cards or other materials by numeric, alphabetic or other established classifications;
  • Assists in the maintenance of personnel, payroll, equipment or other records, and in the preparation of reports;
  • Makes simple arithmetic calculations;
  • Computes data from requisitions, statistical reports, time reports or other records;
  • Acts as receptionist;
  • Answers telephone and personal inquiries;
  • Routes visitors and calls;
  • Secures and gives out routine information relating to office operations and activities;
  • Operates the switchboard or other office equipment ;
  • Enters and retrieves information in an automated information system;

Responsibilities:                              

  • Sweeps and mops floors, stairs and halls;
  • Mows lawns, trims shrubs, rakes leaves and performs other grounds keeping tasks as assigned;
  • Strips and waxes floors and halls using heavy machinery;
  • Performs general cleaning of rooms: dusting furniture; washing and cleaning walls, work benches and areas, blackboards, desks, windows, sinks, showers, toilets and locker rooms;
  • Empties wastepaper baskets, disposes rubbish from large barrels into removal truck containers;
  • Operates heavy rug shampoo equipment;
  • Clears snow and ice from sidewalks, doors, entryways and parking lots;
  • Maintains grounds by picking up trash and debris;
  • Arranges chairs, tables and other equipment in buildings for special events;

General Statement:                        

This is manual work calling for the efficient performance of school building cleaning and minor maintenance tasks according to an established routine. This position is distinguished from that of Custodial Worker by the expanded scope of duties, minor maintenance and the supervisory responsibilities that may be exercised. An incumbent in this position may be responsible for the cleanliness and minor maintenance of a small school building or for a larger building on an assigned shift. Supervision may be exercised over the work of a few Cleaners and Custodial Workers.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Sweeps, mops and waxes floors, washes and cleans walls and windows, dusts furniture and performs other cleaning duties;
  • Cleans and mops lavatories, halls, stairwells, locker and shower rooms and replaces soap and towels;
  • May assign and check the work of a small number of Cleaners and Custodial Workers;
  • Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of rubbish from in and outside the school;
  • Mows lawns, trims shrubs, rakes leaves, removes snow and ice from walks and driveways and performs a variety of other groundskeeping tasks;
  • May make minor repairs to furniture, electrical fixtures, windows and window shades, locks, faucets, heating systems and other equipment;
  • Checks, cleans and services school boilers, checks compression, oil temperature, amount of oil used and reads and sets school thermostats;
  • Consults with supervisor and reports on any problems or breakdowns;
  • Receives, unloads, moves and stores incoming school supplies and small equipment;
  • Secures building, locking and unlocking doors and gates and sets burglar alarms;
  • Orders custodial supplies, materials and equipment and keeps simple inventories;
  • Strips gym floors and resurfaces as required;
  • Paints walls, floors, stairwells and furniture as required;

General Statement:                        

The incumbent manages a school lunch program in a large school or several small schools serving from 500 to 2,000 meals daily, including type A and a la carte meals, to children and adults. This is an important supervisory position involving responsibility for efficiently and economically providing nutritious lunches for school children. Depending upon the size of the school lunch program, work may be performed under the direction of a school lunch director or a school district administrator. Immediate or general supervision is exercised over the work of one or more cook managers and other school lunch program personnel.

  • Plans and supervises the preparation of lunches in a large school or in several small schools;
  • Plans menus or recommends changes in master menus with due regard for nutritional values, acceptability and budgetary limitation;
